Google Apps for Faculty
The Google Apps for Faculty PD series will be held each Thursday from 12:00pm - 1:00pm throughout the Spring 2021 semester. On this page you will find the resources and recordings from each session. Google Meet - 2/4/2021
Objectives:
In the first session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we'll use Google Meet to facilitate our video PD event. Google Meet is Google's Video Conferencing platform and can be used to facilitate video meetings, share screen and chat. In this session, we'll cover the following objectives:
- Create a meeting
- Mute/unmute audio and video
- Change your background
- Raise your Hand
- Turn on/off live captions
- Change the caption language
- Present your screen
- Chat with participants
- Change participant video layout
- Open a Jam (Whiteboard)

Remember that with our current tier of the G Suite, we are not able to record meetings or do "Activities" like breakout rooms or polling. Google Meet is still a good backup if Zoom goes down, BUT for most cases, you should still use and suggest students to use Zoom. - Google Keep:

This is a great note-taking app that's super simple and straightforward. There's not a whole lot to it, but you can use it across devices (phone, tablet, computer) to access your notes wherever you are. - Google Keep Chrome Extension:

Google Chat - 2/11/2021
Objectives:
In the second session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we’ll explore Google Chat and how it can be used for instant messaging with students, faculty, staff, and ROBOTS! Google Chat provides a secure space for informal classroom discussions, collaboration and document sharing, and allows for the creation of rooms and group chat. Google Voice - 2/18/2021
In the third session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we will use Google Voice to obtain a FREE phone number that can be used to call and text students AND will send messages and phone calls to your existing phone number. Google Voice also comes with a Voicemail box and can notify you by email when you get a text message or miss a call. In this session, we’ll cover the following objectives:

Google Drive - 2/25/2021
In the fourth session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we will use Google Drive to create and organize files and folders within Google’s cloud storage system. We’ll discuss sharing permissions and determine how to best share files and folders with people so that they have just the right amount of access. We’ll also discuss how Google Drive can be used to convert Microsoft Office files to Google Documents for easier collaboration and embedding. In this session, we’ll cover the following objectives:

You can download Google Drive File Stream to open Google Drive through Windows Explorer on your computer for easier access to your files. Jamboard - 3/4/2021
In the fifth session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we will use Jamboard to serve as a virtual whiteboard that up to 50 students can contribute to at the same time. We will use the sticky note feature of Jamboard to replicate whiteboard activities normally done in the face-to-face classroom and view how to share a Jamboard with students for collaboration in Zoom. In this session, we’ll cover the following objectives:

In the sixth session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we will explore Google Slides which is Google’s presentation creation tool. Google Docs - 3/18/2021
In the seventh session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we’ll dive into Google Docs and learn how to use Google’s word processing tool. Google Docs exceeds at providing collaborative document creation, editing and annotation capabilities. We’ll also explore the Version History feature which is present in Docs, Slides and Sheets where you can view who contributed to the document, when and restore and save previous versions of the document since Google automatically saves your work. In this session, we’ll cover the following objectives:

Google Forms - 3/25/2021
In the eighth session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we’ll use Google Forms to create surveys that can be used both internally and externally to HCC. Google Forms can be used to create branching so that respondents will see certain questions based on their responses to previous questions. Google Forms can be sent via email, link or be embedded directly into a Canvas page, assignment or announcement. In this session, we’ll cover the following objectives:

Google Sheets - 4/1/2021
In the ninth session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we’ll explore Google Sheets, which is Google’s spreadsheet and data visualization application. Google Sheets can be used to organize and visualize data from Google Forms or imported from an Excel spreadsheet or CSV. We’ll also explore some Google Sheets add-ons that can be used to extend the functionality of Sheets even further. In this session, we’ll cover the following objectives:

Google Sites - 4/15/2021
In the tenth session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we’ll use Google Sites to create collaborative websites that can be published and shared internally or externally to HCC. Google Sites allows for the multiple collaborators to work together to create and edit a website and connects directly to Google Drive for easy embedding of Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms and more. Google Chrome - 4/22/2021
In the eleventh session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we’ll discuss best practices for maximizing efficiency and productivity using Google’s web browser. We’ll review search strategies, advanced search tools and search operators as well as where to find copyright free images that can be used in any educational materials. We’ll also explore the Chrome Web Store where you can install free “Chrome Extensions” which act as mini-programs that add even more functionality to the Chrome Web Browser such as blocking ads, saving tabs and recording videos and screenshots. In this session, we’ll cover the following objectives:

Google Earth - 5/6/2021
In the final session of the Google Apps for Faculty PD series, we’ll explore Google Earth (literally) and create a virtual tour. Google Earth can be used for the creation of “Projects” which allow users to add places to a virtual trip and add images, videos and text to each place so that viewers can read or watch more information about each place as they go along the journey. We’ll also take a quick look at Google Arts & Culture which contains many pre-made journeys with Google Earth such as the ISS, the Pyramids and Museums, as well as other exhibits and experiments. In this session, we’ll cover the following objectives:
