List of Options for Recording Lectures to be Hosted by HCC
There are several software options you can use to record your lectures, but selecting the best option for you depends on your prioritization of ease of use, need to edit, and familiarity with the tools. In any case:
On this page you will see 3 options for recording lectures that include a slide presentation and how to use each software.
Various recording tool options and their pros and cons are listed below:
- All video files SHOULD be hosted on the college's Mediasite video platform.
- Content should be "chunked" so that each video is no longer than 20 minutes.
- Faculty should consider including a reflective question or two at each change in topic. ex. Based on the lecture, how would you answer this question [include topic specific question]?

PowerPoint with Embedded Audio Recordings - Free for HCC Faculty, Staff and Students
You can record audio on individual slides one-by-one, export the entire presentation as an .mp4 video file, and upload your .mp4 to Mediasite for storage and playback. This is the best option if you anticipate needing to make edits to your video in the future and don't want to re-record the entire video each time. The resulting PowerPoint must be saved as an .mp4 file and uploaded to Mediasite for students to view it. If not, the file will likely become too large for students to download and watch.

Cons |
PowerPoint is familiar to most users. |
File must be saved as an .mp4 movie file, not a PowerPoint (.ppt) file in order fr students to view and allow captioning. |

Easy to edit slides and related audio and then reupload - whenever changes are needed. |

Zoom - Free for HCC Faculty, Staff and Students
You can use your personal Zoom room to start a meeting, share your screen, and record as you talk through your PowerPoint slides. Once you are finished, end the meeting, and you will be notified when your recording is finished processing. Download your recording from Zoom and then upload your video to the Mediasite website for storage and playback. Visit this page to learn how to download a Zoom recording and upload it to Mediasite.
