Rubrics - Development and Application
A rubric is a categorized guide to scoring and providing feedback to student work. The scale for a rubric varies but the strongest rubrics have clear criteria included for each scale level.
Best practices for using rubrics:

Best practices for using rubrics:
- Rubrics should be reviewed and tested with sample work at least three times (Besterfield‐Sacre, Gerchak, Lyons, Shuman, & Wolfe, 2004) to ensure clarity and accuracy of design.
- Creating rubrics in Canvas creates an efficient method for grading.
- Rubrics should be provided to the student with the assignment to provide specific assessment criteria.
- Consider having the student evaluate their own work with the rubric and hand it in with their completed assignment. This may ensure that the student reviews and applies the assessment criteria more completely.
- Consider having students use the rubric to review a draft of a peer’s assignment and provide feedback.
- Consider having students use the rubric to evaluate a model paper or project before they create their own work.
For an example, see the sample assignment and rubric below. A downloadable, editable version is also provided below the image.
