Zoom for HCC Tutors
This page has strategies and video instructions designed to support HCC tutors using the howardcc.zoom.us website to conduct their tutoring sessions. Faculty who are looking for assistance with the use of Zoom in Canvas should refer to this presentation that was shared in the Zoom workshop for faculty.
Setting Up A Meeting with a Drop-In Student
Tutors will be assigned specific times to provide drop-in support. Each tutor will ensure that the Learning Assistance center has their Personal Meeting Room link. That is the only link that will be provided to students to use during the drop-in times. The tutor's Personal Meeting Room link will include the prefix https://howardcc.zoom.us/. Do NOT use your personal Zoom account that has a different prefix. This has to do with FERPA compliance.
At the assigned coverage time, the tutor will log into their HCC Zoom account, visit thier Personal Meeting Room and click the Start Meeting button.
This video will give you additional information about how to set up your Personal Meeting Room for drop-in tutoring.

Setting Up a Recurring Meeting with a Student
Tutors who want to schedule ongoing, weekly meetings with a student which happen at the same time and on the same day each week will find it is easier to set up a recurring meeting in Zoom. You can then provide the student the schedule of meetings and a singular link, unique to the student's session which they may use each week. This video steps you through this setup process.
Granting Screen Share Access to Students
Zoom has provided control of the virtual classroom to the instructor/tutor. ONLY the instructor may share their screen during the Zoom session unless they change the share screen setting in their meeting. This video will show you how to change the screen share setting to allow your students to share your screen. Only 1 student may share their screen at a time in this example.
Using the Whiteboard in Zoom
You can share a digital whiteboard right from your Zoom meeting. You can write text, draw, make shapes and arrows to illustrate concepts and check for understanding. View the video below to learn about the whiteboard tools in Zoom.
